I love birds and I love journaling. I'm so happy I found your Substack! I downloaded the app Merlin ID recently (yes, I'm a newbie in birding haha) and it's such a joy. Especially when you can recognise the birds by their sound, thanks to detecting them previously! So cool!

I’m so glad you’re here! For what it’s worth, I think even seasoned birders use Merlin (I use it often but I am definitely not yet what I would consider a “seasoned” birder!). It’s definitely an amazing tool and has been the reason I’ve been able to learn calls myself.

I love the idea of nature journaling. There is so much we can learn from the natural world. I just wish I could draw as beautifully as you!

I’ve yet to be consistent with my nature journaling, but I love doing it on and off. Tombow markers are great for quick sketches. Have you read John Muir Law’s book on nature journaling?

I’ve seen that one recommended lots but haven’t picked it up yet so it’s definitely on my list. I have read Clare Walker Leslie’s Keeping a Nature Journal, which is great. It was first published in the early 2000s I believe so you can get cheap copies of earlier editions online if you’re interested!

Ah thanks for the book recommendation! Will look into it

Your drawing are so lovely and yes my childself could stare at nature and just be mesmerized. Yet passerbyers saw a weird kid starring at ants lol I too could see the interconnectedness.
